The 200-4R Vs. The 700-R4

I Read That Replacing The 200-4R Transmission With A 700-R4 Is A Bad Move. I Don't See Where The Bad Move Is. The 200-4R Transmission Is One Of The Worst Tranny's GM Has Produced. The Clutch Paks Wear Out Too Quickly, And If You Want To Lock Up Your Torque Converter (Extra 3 Tenths In The 1/4 Mile) Then Be Prepared To Replace Parts In The 200-4R. The Heat Generated By The Lock-Up Causes Numerous Problems. I've Found This From Experience, And From Fellow Buick Technicians. The Reason Given Not To Replace It With The More Reliable 700-R4? It Weighs More, The Overdrive Is Deeper In The 200-4R, And They Only Come In Chevy Bolt Patterns. All Of These Are True. Lets Compare Though. The 200-4R Weighs 27 Pounds Less Than The 700-R4 (Maximum) Or 10 Pounds More (Minimum). Go Buy A Fiberglass Bumper If Your Worried About The 27 Pounds. The Overdrive Is Deeper, No Argument There, If You're Worried About Gas Mileage, Then Why Are You Racing The Car. The Gearing Is Better For Heavy Cars. People Change Out There Rearend Gears All The Time, To Leave The Line Harder. The Bolt Patterns Do Only Come In Chevy Form. Jegs Sells An Adapter Plate (Part #890-230001), It's 52 Bucks. Pay That, Or Hold On To It, You'll Need It To Rebuild That 200-4R Again. Everyone I Work With Questions Buick's Decision To Put The 200-4R In The Buick GN Torque Monsters. For A Daily Driven Weekend Racer, The 700-R4 Looks To Be A Winner.
My 700-R4 Is In. The Process And Changeover Was Quite Easy. I Have A 700-R4 Out Of A 1984 C-10 Pickup, Rebuilt Of Course. Items Needed To Changeover. A Dipstick Tube, And Tailshaft Housing From A 1985 Chevrolet Camaro IROC. Jegs Adapter Plate, And A 3½ Inch Cut Driveshaft. The Only Changes That Were Made, Was That The Tailshaft Housing Was Changed, To Accommodate The Enginerred Mount. The Mount Was Made With A Piece Of Steel Bent And Cut To Lye Under The Tailshaft Housing. It Is Connected To The Aluminum With Bolts. The Bolts Are Lock-Tite And Have Lock-Washers On Them. With The Steel Plate Connected To The Housing, The 200's Offset Mount Was Welded To The Steel. This Eliminated Any Crossmember Modifications. Everything Is Bolted Up And Works Great. The T.C.C. Connection Was Also Modified. 3rd And 4th Gear Switched Are Grounded To Enable T.C.C. Lockup. T.C.C. Wiring Is Wired To Terminals A And D On The Tranny. For Pics Of All Of This Go Here.
